Van Wert County Bike Path Complete - ATV Trail Planned
ATV news headlines in California have been bleak recently with Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposing that California close the majority of it’s state parks including some of the most popular OHV areas like the Oceano Dunes and Pismo Beach. Thankfully the ATV trail forecast isn’t as negative in other parts of the country. Van Wert County in Ohio for example has just completed a bike path project and meetings have been scheduled to begin working on plans to open an ATV trail in the area.
An ATV Trail organizational meeting is planned for Sunday June 7th at 2 p.m. in the Junior Fair Building of thet Van Wert County Fairgrounds and funding has been approved by the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund. It is hoped that a designated ATV trail in Van Wert County will help keep ATVs off public roads and bring tourism dollars to the area.
A standard obstacle in creating new ATV trails is finding the land to build it on because of the potential for lawsuits derived from accidents and injuries taking place on the property. Organizer Shawn Collins suggested that abandoned railroad tracks and other easements that run from Van Wert County to Ohio City, Rockford, Wilshire, Wren and back to Ohio City would be ideal for the project and would create an ATV trail over 100 miles long. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is willing to take over liability for any land donated or leased for the project.
“If we could get permission for all that, it would be really good for the community,” he said.
Organizers are asking for anyone in the area who owns an ATV or off-road vehicle as well as anyone from neighboring counties and states who would enjoy a new ATV trail to attend the meeting. source: limaohio.
