An Ode To Titanium Valves
by Nick Harris on Jun 23Did you know that exactly 10 years ago today, on June 23rd 2000, Yamaha Japan (yamaha-motor.co.jp) announced a major innovation in offroad engine performance and began using Titanium valves in their high performance engines?
The YZ250F was already a dominant motocross dirt bike but was made even better. With the increase in horsepower and the decrease in total dirt bike weight came the need for stronger parts and so Titanium valves and springs quickly became a racing industry standard.
That standard is still in place today and where other components such as pistons look to become lighter by being replaced with forged-aluminum the valves and springs haven’t changed all that much in the past decade. They are tried, tested and proven in racing ATVs and motocross dirtbikes and are a popular improvement over stock valves.
When you take on your next engine project don’t forget to upgrade the parts that move but don’t typically improve power output. Don’t make your ATV engines weak link the valves, when it comes to horsepower say Titanium please and you’ll be more confident when the throttle is pegged.
Why choose titanium?
- low density (light weight)
- corrosion resistant
- highest strength to weight ratio of any metal (when pure, it’s often alloyed with other metals)
- As strong as steel but 45% lighter (when pure)
- More Engine Parts
Titanium valves and springs are made mostly of titanium alloy (titanium mixed with other metals such as aluminum and vanadium) so it’s important to know just how much titanium is in the product you’re buying. Avoid paying top dollar for titanium valves that contain 1% or less of titanium since the only reason to use such a small amount is to be allowed to call them titanium. Yamaha introduced their titanium valves with 30% titanium and most reputable dealers have optimized their products for top performance and max revs. This is one ATV part you shouldn’t mind spending a bit more on from a brand name dealer.
