Amatoya Fire Recon Vehicle

by Nick Harris on Jun 24

If the Amatoya fire recon vehicle LOOKS like a futuristic battle ATV that’s because it is. The Amatoya is designed to help firefighters contain brush fires and the future is now. Design student Liam Ferguson won the 2010 James Dyson award for his concept.
Amatoya Fire Recon Vehicle Amatoya Military ATV This machine looks like a blast to ride and has some fairly impressive features including a remotely operated suppression cannon outfit (ROSCO) and military grade sacrificial thermo ceramic intumescent paints. It is designed to not only protect the driver in case it is caught in a fire but also to remain mobile even in prolonged burn situations.

No mention yet if Ford is backing the project, which I assume they would have, or if Liam was laying down the gauntlet with a display of how good the ford logo looks on the Amatoya. Monash Art & Design student Liam Ferguson has won the Gold Prize in the 2010 James Dyson Award for his sci-fi meets safety Amatoya Fire Reconnaissance Vehicle: a specialised, high-performance vehicle designed to offer a faster and safer response in first line defence against bushfires.

The James Dyson Award was announced at Standards Australia’s Australian International Design Awards held in Sydney on Friday 4 June 2010. The program recognises and promotes design excellence and innovation in Australia across eight industry categories and a student category.

“Liam’s Amatoya vehicle is an outstanding student design which ticked all the boxes for our judges. His solution is well researched, carefully considered and professionally presented,” says Stephanie Pemberton, Program Director of the Australian International Design Awards.

“Liam clearly has a promising future in design and the Australian International Design Awards is proud to recognise and encourage emerging talent of his calibre.”

Liam received a cash prize of $4,000 towards the development of his design career, and also an all expenses paid trip to the United Kingdom to visit the Dyson Research Design and Development Centre, home of inventor and engineer James Dyson.
